On the Setab Province

Situated around the River Calsoria and its major tributaries, the Setab Province has always been a center for trade.  When it was still a kingdom called Calsoria, it focused in trading the raw natural resources from the west and north to the southern kingdoms traditionally lacking in such assets and enabling easier traffic of specialty goods from one end of the continent to the other.  All of these imports and exports were (and still are) properly taxed, of course.  It is likely this taxation that led to the Grandfathers’ War.  The founder of the Setab Empire emerged, Radritch Setab, from this Province.  The Setab family still has its seat of power in Setab City, from which it passed down all just laws and fair rulings.

Calsoria allied with the Tremon Kingdom to save its resources from being taken by the Princedom of Dyrsah, leading to the Grandfathers’ War.  Though Calsoria was reluctant to commit to a war, once it began, the Kingom was fierce in defence of its newfound allies.  Many of its cultural and trade centers were destroyed in the war and the three kingdoms more or less shared authority.  Today, the Setab Province is the hub of all major activity in the Empire and Setab City is the centerpiece.  The Central Trade Road begins and ends at Setab City, the Agora generates new ideas and new philosophies while selling the most exotic of goods, and the Dry Docks provide the most of the rougher entertainments to be found.  Most of the Sects and Orders have their main building within the city as well, some of the most notable being the Grand Academagica and the Crystalline Spire.

The Setabese people are as diverse as the goods brought in on the daily shipping barges.  The Calsoria River freezes north of Setab City every winter, and many are seasonally employed to help break up the ice before it can flow down and damage the city.  A good living can be made by the hardier people as caravan guards, both on the river and the road.  The majority of the Setabese populace, however, works in trade or politics in the capitol.  Races of all kinds can be found, though those with a darker inclination stay out of easy sight as the memory of the Great Fiend War has faded the least in this Province.  Lightborn are present in great numbers within Setab City, usually within the military or as guards of various kinds, while Bright Elf communities are not found at all within the borders of the Province, though many lone Bright Elves make sizeable fortunes fashioning artisan goods.  Due perhaps to the variety of exotic trading partners, Half Elves are more readily accepted here than nearly anywhere else, and their huge numbers, especially in Setab City, reflect that.

The Setab Province is directly ruled by the leader of the Setab family, usually a male and always in the direct line from Radritch.  Caier Setab was the last known of his line, and the remainder of the Setab family has yet to agree to an appropriate heir.  In the meantime, Bale Gaithan has been appointed Regent, and it is he who makes most decisions for both the Province and the Empire.  As Regent, Bale does not directly wield the Scepter, though the office is still called the Scepter due to longstanding tradition.  Therefore, a law the Regent makes in the absence of the true Emperor is still referred to as the Scepter‘s Rule.
