On the Halkir Province
The Halkir Province is well-known as the province of the worst weather. The northern parts assaulted year-round by blizzards while the southern parts suffer through monsoons. The province is longer than it is wide, bordering Ymmalesh and Tremon at the extreme north and south respectively and Setab to the west along the Servatus mountain range. Though the Skonse Peninsula is disrupted by these mountains, it is acknowledged to belong to the Halkir Province as well. The primary natural resources of the Province are sea life, unique alchemical ingredients, and copper and tin deposits.
It is said that the Halkir Kingdom was the oldest of the original three Kingdoms, though without proper proof, Calsoria still officially holds that title. It gladly joined with Calsoria and Tremon in the Grandfathers’ War, as the kingdom had a tradition of having a standing army of the toughest warriors in the land. Before the last major cataclysm, the Halkir Province was larger to the east, large enough to have enough room to sustain farms and orchards. During the War, however, much of this land was drowned, leaving the province with a new and very rocky and severe coastline.
Most citizens, called Halkirines, live within a few days of the Glimmering Sea, and the majority of the citizenry are involved with the ocean in some way. Sailors and shipwrights are much more common than miner or smelters, though it is through the latter than the province generates its most steady income. With the sea ever present, it should come as no surprise that the Halkir Province has the highest concentrations of Mur. Humans are still the majority race with Half-Elves close behind, though there are fewer Bright Elves than in other provinces. Other races are present in average numbers as the people take their cue from the sea. It spares no one and favors no one, regardless of the color of their skin.
The Scepter acknowledges the rule of Lord-Governor Balinth Seaborn who rules the Halkir Province from the capital city, Kyross. His cousin, Shuler of the Coralgate, is defiant of his cousin’s rule and does not pay homage to him. Shuler lays claim to the Halkir Province as well, but specifically the Skanse Peninsula and the city of Coralgate. This rift stems from a family incident some years ago, with the cousins’ respective grandfathers. The brothers fought publicly over fishing policies, but it is said that it was really over the hand of a beautiful woman. In any case, the Scepter did not acknowledge either as the Lord-Governor, so the brothers fought bitterly amongst themselves, with one retreating to Coralgate. Though Shuler’s grandfather generally enjoyed more wealth having taken over the shipping taxes of the city, Balinth’s had more people. So the stalemate lasted for two generations, only ending recently with the appointment of Regent Bale Gaithan who quickly ended the feud by acknowledging Balinth Seaborn’s claim as the most valid, though Shuler’s grandfather was the firstborn of the brothers. However, Shuler still has a lot of sway over the Lower Skanse and Coralgate due to the difficulty of strictly enforcing Imperial Law behind the enemy lines of the Mageocracy.
